OCTOBER 2011: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

In the United States, since 1975, the incidence of new cases of breast cancer has increased at a faster rate among white women than among black women.

At the same time, the incidence of death among white women has decreased – while in black women it has increased.

White women still have the highest proportionate occurrence of breast cancer per head of population.

American Indian and Alaskan Native Women have the lowest incidence – only about 60 percent of that of white women.

Women of Asian descent have an incidence rate of around 80 percent of that of white women; Hispanic women have an incidence of around 75 percent of that of white women.

In 2011, despite all the advances, it is estimated that there will be more than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer among American women and more that 2,100 in American men.

An estimated 39,000 American women will die this year from the disease in addition to 450 men, according to U.S. Department of Health figures.
